At this time of year, much focus is on the upcoming holidays. In quiet moments, though, I have been reflecting on the past and future of the camera club.

First, what is the purpose of the club? According to the Bylaws, the purpose of the club is "to promote, encourage, and foster the photographic art in all its forms; to plan and to hold photographic exhibitions and competitions; and for the enjoyment, mastery, and furtherance of photography through cooperation, effort, and good fellowship." Second, how do we meet this purpose?

Exhibitions - We currently have two ongoing exhibitions. These are at WannaGetta Pizza (3302 S National Ave F, Springfield, MO) and the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center located in Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park (2400 S Scenic Ave, Springfield, MO). We have shown our work at various libraries in the area, the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, as well as other locations.

Next year, our competition winners will be displayed at Bedford Camera (2550 S Campbell Ave, Springfield, MO). We are always looking for new places to exhibit our work. Contact our exhibits chairman if you have any suggestions or ideas.

Competitions - The Quarterly Competition and Scavenger Hunt competitions have a long tradition in the club. Of course, we have gone from film and slides to digital, and from minimal processing to any type of processing one wants to do. To promote additional shooting, the Themed Challenge was started a couple of years ago.

Even if you do not want to compete, there is much to be learned from listening to the judges' comments from the Quarterly Competitions. The first thing you will likely notice is that the three judges often disagree. Listen to the comment, look at the photo, and decide if you agree or disagree. Noting what you like or don't like about a photograph is a good way to develop a direction in your photography.

Cooperation, effort, and good fellowship are promoted by field trips, social time before the meetings, and going out after the meetings. We usually have two social events each year; a club picnic and the Awards Banquet.

Every program is meant to inform or inspire. Every field trip is a chance to get to know members better, to learn, and to shoot. Our past has given us our traditions. We will celebrate our present at the Awards Banquet. You will give us our future.

Have a question? Ask! Have a suggestion? Let us know! We are always looking for new ideas.
