The Quarterly Competition is open to any member currently in good standing. Ribbons are given quarterly based on points awarded to each entry in three skill levels from three independent judges. Points are accumulated through the year to determine the Photographer of the Year Award. Judges share their opinions on each photograph’s strengths and/or weaknesses. These comments are intended to be beneficial to each photographer’s development.
We have three judges (not our members) judge the prints after they are turned in. Each print is judged on its own merit, not against all the others. The prints can be no longer than 24 inches on the long side and no less than 16 inches on the short side. Anything within those perimeters will be accepted. No framing required. Most of our members mat their entries, then slip them in a plastic sleeve to be turned in. Some do not mat as long as they do not exceed the above measurements. Those are usually stabilized with mat board or foam core. Each person that submits a print is required to send a digital image also for creating a slide show after the judging is done. The slide show is shown the next month after the prints are turned in with the judges comments and the image with the most judges points wins a ribbon. 1st, 2nd 3rd and HM. There are two skill levels, Advanced and Basic. Advanced consists of members who have achieved at least 1000 points in the last year's competition. New members who submit a print are usually put into the basic category, unless they specify they want to be in the Advanced category, but once they are in the Advanced category, they cannot go back to the Basic category. In addition, someone can submit an "artists statement" with their print. Sometimes it helps the judges know what they were trying to achieve with the photos.
Within those two categories are two sections. Photo and Creative. The member can specify if they want their entry in either section. But no matter if they are Creative, they must start out as a photograph.
